SUPER ME!

This project is about Super Powers ie. the kind of Character Traits that make Super Heroes really Super! I have always been in love with comic books and Super Heroes, and I think that sometimes we place too much focus on the visible manifestation of those powers and forget about the most important skills they exhibit.  The list of Superpowers we explore in this project come from author Paul Tough, in his book 7 Key Character Traits for Success.  These traits encourage openness, self awareness and resiliency.

The Super Powers:

Grit: courage and resolve, strength of character

Curiosity: a strong desire to know or learn something

Self-control: the ability to control oneself, in particular one's emotions and desires, especially in difficult situations

Social intelligence: is the ability to get along well with others, and to get them to cooperate with you.

Zest: great enthusiasm and energy.

Optimism: hopefulness and confidence about the future or the success of something.

Gratitude: the quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness.

The Workshops

In this workshop, participants explore the above “Super Powers” in relation to their own desires and potential.  We discuss how we can use those traits to guide us in decision-making, choosing friends and role models, and as goals for our own personal development.  We do this through storytelling, illustration, creative movement and sculpture.

The Exhibition

Each participant will come away from the workshop with a comic book and action figure based on their own Super-Self!  A curated exhibition of these works will take place in an appropriate and accessible community setting, and all of the work will be exhibited in an online gallery which participants can access to update the adventures of their Super Me.

Logistics

Workshops are available for children and/or adults, and will be tailored to fit your community.  The maximum group size per session is 20. I work with local organizations, and am equally comfortable in classroom, gallery, studio or community center locations.   If you are interested, contact me and I will provide a project proposal for your site including time, space and projected costs.
